Poulsbo is a community that has tradtionally been associated with Norwegians. And, as the story goes, its name was apparently the result of a spelling error by one Jorgen Eliason who arrived here in 1883 with a young son and his sister. Within a month there was another arrival, Iver Moe. Iver was married with three sons. He and his family reportedly lived together in Paulsbo, Norway. Well, it seems the snow packed peaks and waterways reminded a lot of other Norwegians of their homeland and more began to arrive taking up the logging and farming profession. Consequently Norwegian became the dominant immigrant language. By 1886 there was quite a colony so Iver Moe decided it might be a good idea to apply for a post office and wanted to apply for one under the name of his old country hometown, Paulsbo, Norway. As the story continues Iver may not have had the best handwriting. In any case the postmaster general misread it as Poulsbo and it has been so known, at least to Europeans ever since. Where go Norwegians, so goes Lutefisk and codfishing. A major water route grew between Dogfish Bay ( now Liberty Bay) and the Pike Place Market in Seattle. These small boats also called on other Puget Sound ports and became known as the Mosquito Fleet and created incomes for the north Kitsap farmers, loggers and artisans. The picturesque downtown today is still home to restaurants, bakeries, gift shops and other offerings inspired by a Norwegian heritage but the mix of languages has grown richer. The Port operates a very popular marina on the shore of the downtown. It has 250 permanent slips and 130 guest slips. Each slip has 30 amp power and a fresh water spigot. The Seattle Poulsbo connection for boaters is very popular during the boating season, usually considered from May through September. Many of the most popular Poulsbo houses are visible from the Marina and are easily accessible by the Winslow Ferry just 20 minutes drive away. And if that’s not reason enough, how about dozens of festivals and celebrations the town hosts each year, from Viking Fest in May to the Yule Fest and Christmas Boat Parade in December. A craftsman cottage housing development begun in the late 1990′s known as Poulsbo Place 1 and 2 developed architecturally distinctive housing within walking distance of the marina, shopping and most services. Now fully built out, re-sales of these lovely homes have held their values very well even in the face of the real estate crash. The area today has become an employment, medical services, retail and recreational center. The new Olhava Project bordering on Highway 3 has many familiar big box stores including Wal-Mart and Home Depot. Olympic College opened its north Kitsap campus in the Olhava project. The campus buildings incorporate a northwest lodge theme and are advanced energy smart buildings. This commercial center offers a wide variety of fully developed commercial pads for retail, office and professional service vendors in the area. The Twelve Trees Business Park provides industrial space for local light industrial companies. Best known among Kitsap manufacturers is Watson Furniture, a custom office furniture and fixtures supplier to companies such as Boeing. In recent years Watson has been a leading implementer of change in manufacturing processes to reduce waste and incorporate green technology. In 2009 they acquired some smaller companies adding employment and revenues. The Blue Hill Office Park Office Park is home to a number of technology and professional companies including General Construction Company, a major general contracting and consulting company and Paladin Software. Electronic Data Sysytems (EDS) also has offices in the area. Technical and professional employees are abundant originating from the major universities in Seattle, the Bangor Trident nuclear submarine program, the Puget Sound naval Shipyard and the Microsoft, Boeing communities around Puget Sound. Many smaller technology startups have successfully incubated in North Kitsap and Bainbridge Island growing into larger quarters. Search Poulsbo Real Estate
